Barony

In the peerage, baronies form the lowest rank, placed immediately below [URL=/help/org?type=viscount]viscounties[/URL]. A female of baronial rank has the title baroness. The rank of baron was introduced to distinguish those men who had pledged their loyalty to the king under the feudal system. All who held their feudal barony [I]in-chief of the king[/I], that is with the king as his immediate overlord, became alike [I]barons of the king[/I], bound to perform a stipulated military service, and obliged to attend his council.
