A unit is not an individual, but rather a group of ten individuals specialised in the same profession or assigned to a specific task. They are all citizens that live on your land and have chosen to work for you in exchange for a wage.
Chronology
The different types of units are unlocked over time, in each new continent. Units cannot be trained or move within a continent where they have not yet been unlocked.
