Petardiers operate in small, disciplined teams trained to approach enemy gates under covering fire, set a heavy petard against the timbers or masonry, light the fuse and withdraw. A successful detonation can open an immediate breach; the device is consumed on use and the crew is exposed and lightly armed. Petardiers excel only in sieges and prepared assaults.
